Leap Day Traditions

Irish Tradition: Just as in the movie "Leap Year" one of the biggest Leap Day Irish traditions is the women propose to their men! The tradition began when St. Bridget made a deal with St. Patrick to allow the women to propose to their men.  The deal was agreed upon that one day every 4 years the tradition would turn and it would be acceptable for the women to propose to the men.  St. Bridget introduced this idea as a way to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar fashion Leap Day balances the calender.

Other Leap Day Traditions:
In parts of Europe, if a man does not accept the woman's proposal he must buy her 12 gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring.

In Scotland it is considered bad luck to be born on Leap Day.

Other Leap Day Fact: The Chicago Playboy Club opened its doors on Leap Day 1960.
